Waving cats, also known as happy cats or lucky cats, are a common Japanese talisman, or good luck charm. They are most often depicted as white cats sitting upright, with one paw raised in a beckoning gesture. These cats are often seen in restaurants and shops near the entrance.
History: Waving cats (also called "Maneki-neko" in Japan) are thought to bring money and good fortune. Though the cat appears to be waving according to Western cultural behavior, the gesture is actually a common Japanese method of beckoning, and one of the names of this cat is indeed “beckoning cat”. Waving cats date back to the 1800s, and first appear during the Edo period in Japan, though it’s not known whether they originated in Tokyo or Kyoto.
Japanese Name: Maneki-neko
Characteristics: These cats may seem to be waving hello, but they’re actually performing the classic Japanese beckoning gesture. Keep some of these cats around to welcome luck and good fortune wherever you are!
Size: Each waving cat Good Luck Mini® is ¾ of an inch tall.
