There are two species of Orangutan, and they live only in the forests of Sumatra and Borneo, islands between Asia and Australia. This makes them the only great ape to live outside Africa. The beautiful creatures can live 40 years or more.

  • History: Orangutans have been considered critically endangered for a few decades now, a classification that places them just one level from extinct in the wild. With their extremely limited range and forest habitat, they are especially susceptible to logging and deforestation. Fortunately, many organizations are leading efforts to connect and protect disparate Orangutan habitats and to create sustainable alternatives to the forest products that result in habitat loss.
